Long time educator, finance enthusiast joins Ģtv Board of Trustees

Appointed by Senator Bill Rabon

Brett Burroughs, a Williams Township native and longtime educator, has joined the Ģtv Board of Trustees. A graduate of Ģtv, East Carolina University and UNC Pembroke, Burroughs spent nearly 30 years teaching civics and economics at South Columbus High School before retiring in 2022.

Retired educator and coach nominated for Ģtv Board of Trustees Seat

Appointed by Columbus County Board of Commissioners

Michael Powell, a retired educator and longtime coach from Hallsboro, has joined the Ģtv Board of Trustees. Powell spent more than 45 years in education, including 36 years teaching history, philosophy and civics at West Columbus High School before later serving as assistant principal and principal at several Columbus County schools.

Local Attorney to bring ‘fresh perspective’ to Ģtv Board of Trustees

Appointed by House of Representatives Brenden Jones

Chris Russell, a Chadbourn native and local attorney, has joined the Ģtv Board of Trustees. As one of the board’s youngest members, Russell said he hopes to bring a fresh perspective while helping Ģtv continue investing in students and workforce development. He currently works as a partner at Wright, Worley, Pope, Ekster and Moss.

Reconnecting Adult Learners to What Matters

In Spring 2025, Ģtv joined the fifth cohort of NC Reconnect, a statewide initiative focused on helping adult learners return to college, complete credentials, and build stronger futures for themselves and their families. For Ģtv, this work quickly became more than an enrollment initiative. It became a community effort rooted in access, support, and opportunity.

Launched through a collaboration between the John M. Belk Endowment, myFutureNC, the Belk Center for Community College Leadership, and the North Carolina Community College System, NC Reconnect helps adults ages 25 to 44 reconnect with education through flexible pathways, targeted outreach, and personalized support.

Aspen Institute Names Ģtv a Top 200 Community College

Today, the Aspen Institute named Ģtv as one of the 200 institutions eligible to compete for the $1 million Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence, the nation’s premier recognition of high achievement and performance among two-year colleges. The 200 colleges were selected based on their student outcomes data, including retention, completion, transfer, and bachelor’s attainment rates. Started in 2010, this is the ninth cycle of the Aspen Prize.

“Being named among the top 200 community colleges in the nation is a reflection of the incredible work happening at Ģtv every single day,” said Dr. Chris English, president of Ģtv. “This recognition affirms our commitment to opening doors for our community through education, workforce training, and opportunity. It’s an honor to see the hard work of our students, faculty, and staff recognized on a national level.”

Ģtv president earns ‘Best Foot Forward’ Award

At the Nov. 24 Ģtv Board of Trustees meeting, board chair Joe Hooks presented the “Best Foot Forward” Award to Ģtv President Dr. Chris English. English’s contributions to the North Carolina Community College System’s Workforce Development Leadership Committee earned him top honors from the state system office.

Ģtv Transitional Studies Earns Top Honors in Prison Education Vocational Challenge

Ģtv received recognition for the success and impact of its Transitional Studies program, which supports incarcerated adult learners through educational instruction and HiSET preparation opportunities.

The program focuses on helping students build foundational academic skills while creating pathways toward continued education, career readiness, and personal growth. Ģtv’s efforts have contributed to significant improvements in student achievement and HiSET completion rates, helping participants work toward brighter futures both during and after incarceration.

Enrollment Management

Long-term Goal: Increase Ģtv enrollment through existing college programs and the development of new programs that support student success and community job growth.

2026 Target Increase college FTE by 25%.

Results

The college increased FTE by an overall 37.2%, surpassing the long-term goal of 25%. This growth was driven by implementing a structured program review process, developing FTE-by-program and instructor reporting, and using labor market data to align programs with regional workforce needs. Ģtv also strengthened early connections with prospective students by using myFutureNC Columbus County data to guide enrollment projections and expanding summer registration support through the Golden Leaf Grant. The college improved the student entry experience by revising New Student Orientation and coordinating an annual schedule with high school partners.

Foundation Support

Long-term Goal: Increase Ģtv Foundation support for college programs through gifts, donations, and grants awarded.

2026 Target Increase funding of unrestricted gifts by 25% and awarded grants by 40%.

Results

The college increased unrestricted giving from an average of $39,674 to $134,395. The college also increased grant funding by $9,164,166, growing from $0 in 2020 to $9,164,166 in 2026, significantly surpassing the target of a 40% increase in awarded grants. These results were achieved by strengthening philanthropic strategy through the creation of a Foundation Board Fundraising Committee, expanding coordinated annual giving and donor engagement initiatives, and increasing the college’s capacity to pursue state, federal, and foundation grants aligned with workforce and student success priorities.

Infrastructure Improvements

Long-term Goal: Improve college infrastructure that supports existing programs and future programming for student/community success.

2026 Target Increase funding support for college infrastructure by 25%.

Results

The college secured more than $40 million in infrastructure funding support, far exceeding the 2026 target. This progress was driven by developing and implementing a Strategic Facilities Master Plan, conducting a comprehensive facilities needs assessment, and aligning infrastructure planning with long-term workforce and student success priorities. Ģtv secured significant state, federal, and county investments to expand and modernize facilities, including funding for the STEM/Transportation Technology Building, public safety training infrastructure, and major campus renovations. Additional investments strengthened campus safety, technology, and learning environments through facility upgrades, cybersecurity improvements, and expanded instructional capacity to support current and future programs.

Health & Wellness

Long-term Goal: Engage the college employees and the citizens of Columbus County in activities that support a healthy community.

2026 Target Increase the level of activity in college sponsored community & health activities by 25%.

Results

The college increased participation in college sponsored health and wellness activities from a baseline of 0 to 2,780 participants, significantly exceeding the target of a 25% increase in community and campus engagement. This progress was achieved by establishing a wellness framework built around five core elements of health and launching a coordinated series of campus and community wellness initiatives. Ģtv hosted a wide range of activities, including wellness education sessions, family-centered events, and community health programs, while strengthening partnerships with local organizations to expand reach and participation. Strong cross-department collaboration and targeted outreach helped position Ģtv as a hub for health, wellness, and community engagement across Columbus County.

Funding the Future of Workforce Training

Major grant investments fueling Ģtv’s workforce training programs this year.

National science grant

National science grant paves way for electric vehicle training at Ģtv

Ģtv received a $468,929 Advanced Technological Education grant from the National Science Foundation to support the development of electric vehicle training opportunities at the college. The investment will help Ģtv prepare students for careers in the rapidly growing EV industry while addressing workforce needs across the region.

EMS lab grant

Emergency Medical Services program upgrades lab space with $400,000 grant

Ģtv enhanced its Emergency Medical Services training program through a $400,000 NC Community College System grant focused on strengthening healthcare workforce education. The funding supported major upgrades to the EMS lab, including the addition of a fully equipped ambulance simulator.

Golden Leaf Funding

Ģtv recieves Golden LEAF funding to expand high school welding opportunities

Ģtv received $200,000 in funding from the Golden LEAF Foundation to expand welding education opportunities for students across Columbus County. The funding will support the development of a new mobile welding lab designed to bring hands-on technical training

Ģtv celebrates $4.9 million federal investment to expand Truck Driver Training

Ģtv announced a $4.9 million federal investment to expand and strengthen its Truck Driver Training Program. The funding will help increase training capacity, improve safety, and provide more students access to workforce opportunities in the high-demand transportation industry.

Planned improvements include the development of a new five-acre driving pad, additional trucks and trailers, and advanced simulator technology designed to enhance hands-on instruction. The program will also connect to Ģtv’s new Transportation Technology and STEM Building currently under development.

Strategic Partnerships

Expanding Pathways to Four Year Success

At Ģtv, students do not have to leave Columbus County to begin building toward a bachelor’s degree.

This past year, Ģtv strengthened that promise by adding three new guaranteed transfer partnerships with leading North Carolina universities, creating even more streamlined pathways for students to continue their education after earning an associate degree.

New agreements with Western Carolina University, North Carolina State University, and UNC Pembroke joined Ģtv’s growing network of university partners, making the transfer process more seamless, affordable, and student focused than ever before.

“These partnerships are yet another tool in Ģtv’s toolbox to help ensure that all of our students are able to reach their academic and career goals,” said Dr. Brandon Jenkins, Executive Vice President.

Ģtv to launch Ģtv at Bolton program to expand access to classes

Beginning in summer and fall 2026, Ģtv will offer classes in Bolton through a new partnership with the town. Courses will be held at Bolton Town Hall and the Bolton Senior Center, bringing educational opportunities closer to residents in eastern Columbus County.

The initiative will include workforce training, transitional studies and community enrichment classes, with many offerings available at low or no cost. College leaders say the program is designed to reduce transportation barriers and make education more accessible to local residents.

Over 3,400 K-8 Students Test Drive Local Jobs at First Ever Careers on Wheels Event

More than 3,400 kindergarten through eighth grade students participated in Ģtv’s first-ever Careers on Wheels event, designed to introduce young students to local career opportunities through hands-on experiences. In partnership with Columbus County Schools, the event featured trucks, emergency vehicles, technical equipment, and demonstrations from local industry and public safety partners.

Students had the opportunity to explore career paths by interacting directly with professionals and learning about the training programs available at Ģtv. Organizers said the event was created to help students connect classroom learning with real-world careers while building early awareness of workforce opportunities available within their own community.

Ģtv plans to continue Careers on Wheels as an annual event focused on inspiring future workforce development and career exploration throughout Columbus County.

Ģtv (Ģtv) is proud to announce that Akin Ezzell has been named Ģtv’s 2026 nominee for the Dallas Herring Achievement Award, one of the North Carolina Community College System’s most distinguished honors. Established in memory of Dr. Herring, the award recognizes students who embody his philosophy of "taking people where they are and carrying them as far as they can go."

Veronica Powell was promoted to Associate Dean of Transitional Studies and Prison Education at Ģtv. In her new role, Powell will help expand educational opportunities within Columbus County correctional facilities while continuing to support Transitional Studies students on Ģtv’s campus.

Wood leads new Pathway to Employment initiative; has eyes on state-wide implementation

Ģtv’s Cristian Wood is leading a statewide initiative designed to strengthen Pathway to Employment (PTE) courses across North Carolina’s community college system. As the host college for the Pathway to Employment Alignment Project, Ģtv will work with 14 additional community colleges to create a more unified and workforce-focused program model.

Hayes rejoins Ģtv staff as new Associate Dean of Public Safety

Ronnie Hayes rejoined Ģtv as the college’s new Associate Dean of Public Safety. A longtime public safety professional and retired fire chief, Hayes now oversees short-term training programs in fire, EMS, and law enforcement while helping expand Ģtv’s public safety curriculum offerings.

Named 2026 Recipient of T. Elbert Clemmons Excellence in Teaching Award

Nicky Hobbs, mathematics instructor, was named the 2026 recipient of Ģtv’s T. Elbert Clemmons Excellence in Teaching Award in recognition of his dedication to student success, instructional excellence, and commitment to the college’s teaching mission.

Dr. Chris English presented the award to Hobbs during graduation and described him as a “passionate educator who brings energy, innovation and a student-centered approach to every classroom.” English said Hobbs is known for providing additional tutoring, staying late to help students prepare for exams, and making sure every student feels supported academically and personally.

Receives 2026 Dr. Dan and Cheryl Moore Outstanding Staff Award

Larry Everette, High School Equivalency Examiner and Recruiter for Transitional Studies, was named the 2026 recipient of Ģtv’s Dr. Dan and Cheryl Moore Outstanding Staff Award. The award recognizes a staff member who exemplifies integrity, innovation, and outstanding service to students, the college, and the wider community.

Dr. Dan Moore, former Ģtv president, presented the award to Everette during graduation and described him as someone who “encourages students to build brighter futures while helping to remove barriers to education.”

Ģtv's Heavy Equipment Operator Training Program Prepares Students for In-Demand Careers

Ģtv’s Heavy Equipment Operator Training program launched Spring 2026, providing students with hands-on experience in a high-demand industry. The 15-week program equips students with foundational skills needed for entry-level careers in heavy equipment operation.

Accelerated Bridge Program

New Accelerated Bridge Program Fast-Tracks Registered Nursing School for Working Lisensed Practical Nurses

Ģtv is launching a new accelerated bridge program designed to help working Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) become Registered Nurses (RNs) in just three semesters. The new LPN-to-Associate Degree Nursing Transition Program will begin this summer and aims to address the growing shortage of registered nurses in Columbus County and surrounding communities.

Throughout the 2025–2026 academic year, we have seen remarkable momentum across our campus. From enrollment growth and expanded partnerships to statewide and national recognition, this year has been marked by meaningful progress that continues to strengthen opportunities for the people we serve.

One of the most encouraging signs of that progress has been the continued momentum we have seen in student opportunity. Across our campus, we have welcomed students taking their first steps toward a degree, adult learners returning to the classroom, and graduates building pathways to long-term careers and continued education. Their determination and success continue to reflect the vital role Ģtv plays in changing lives across our community.

Our continued work in Cohort 5 of NC Reconnect played an important role in that momentum. By reaching adult learners across Columbus County and connecting them with flexible pathways and one-on-one support, we have helped more individuals return to college with confidence and purpose. These efforts continue to reflect our commitment to opening doors and meeting students where they are.

This year also brought extraordinary recognition for the work happening at Ģtv. The Aspen Institute named Ģtv among the Top 200 community colleges in the nation eligible for the 2027 Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence. This distinction is a testament to the dedication of our faculty and staff and to the determination of our students, whose success remains at the center of everything we do.

We also expanded opportunities for our students beyond graduation through new transfer partnerships with UNC Pembroke, NC State University, and Western Carolina University. These additions now bring Ģtv’s total to 10 universities and educational partners, creating clear pathways for students to continue their education and achieve their goals.

Our growth has also been visible across campus and within our workforce programs. Construction continues on our $22 million Transportation Technology and STEM Building, a transformative investment that will prepare students for careers in automotive, diesel, truck driver training, and emerging technologies. We are also deeply grateful for the major multi-year commitment from Black’s Tire & Auto Service, whose support through the Ģtv Foundation demonstrates a strong belief in the future of Ģtv students and the workforce needs of our region.

Most importantly, this year has reinforced that our greatest achievement is our students’ success. Every partnership formed, every facility enhanced, and every recognition received ultimately points back to the lives being changed through education and training.

A Message from Mr. Joe Hooks

It has been a privilege to serve as Chairman during another year of meaningful progress and forward movement at Ģtv. The Board has remained focused on supporting the long-term vision of the college while ensuring that Ģtv continues to meet the needs of our students, workforce, and community.

Throughout this past year, the Board has had the opportunity to see firsthand the continued growth and momentum taking place across campus. We are proud of the strategic work being done to strengthen academic pathways, expand workforce training opportunities, and position the college for long-term success.

A major focus of this year has been continued campus growth and infrastructure development. The Board has worked closely with President Dr. Chris English and college leadership to support ongoing progress on the new Transportation Technology and STEM Building, a transformative project that will significantly enhance training opportunities in automotive systems, diesel technology, and truck driver training. This investment reflects Ģtv’s continued commitment to preparing students for high demand careers that directly support the workforce needs of our region.

In addition to physical growth, the Board is proud of the college’s expanding partnerships with business, industry, and educational institutions. These relationships continue to create stronger pathways for students and strengthen the role Ģtv plays in workforce and economic development throughout Columbus County and surrounding communities.

We are especially encouraged by the college’s ability to respond to changing student and community needs through thoughtful planning and leadership. Whether through expanded transfer opportunities, adult learner initiatives, or new workforce programs, Ģtv continues to demonstrate its commitment to growth with purpose.

The Board of Trustees remains committed to supporting the mission and future of Ģtv. We are confident in the direction of the college and excited about what lies ahead as Ģtv continues to build opportunities for students and strengthen our community.

A Message from Nathan J. Moore

Ģtv isn’t standing still, and neither is the community we serve.

As we step into our 62nd year, the question is no longer what Ģtv has meant to this region… it’s what we’re willing to build next together. Workforce demands are changing. Small businesses are fighting to grow. Families are looking for opportunity without a lifetime of debt. In the middle of it all sits Ģtv, not as an option, but as a solution.

As many of you know, I grew up on this campus. From being a three-year-old in the Child Development Center while my father served as Dean of Students to 1982, when he was selected as President, I saw firsthand what it means for a college to shape a community.

Years later, watching my son McArthur graduate in 2025 wasn’t just a proud moment, it was a reminder: this mission is personal.

I’ve been more impressed than ever watching him flourish as he transferred to the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, confident, prepared, and equipped because of the foundation Ģtv gave him.

At the start of this year, I made a decision that reflects both conviction and calling. I stepped into the role of Small Business Center Director and became an employee at Ģtv. This wasn’t a career move. It was a purpose move.

I can tell you with confidence that it has only strengthened my belief in this mission. I now see up close how every donation and every act of support is being put to work in real, measurable ways, helping people build businesses, support families, and create opportunities.

What you’ve helped build is working.

As we look ahead, this fall will bring new leadership to the Foundation Board. While I step out of the formal role, I will not step away. If anything, I’m leaning in, fully committed to this mission and this community.

Every dollar given to the Ģtv Foundation stays right here, making a direct impact on our community.
